Breathwork contraindications
Please notify your facilitator if you have any of the following:
Cardiovascular conditions
- Uncontrolled high blood pressure
- History of heart attack
- Cardiovascular disease
- Previous stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA)
- Severe arrhythmias or other significant heart conditions
Neurological conditions
- Epilepsy or seizure disorders
- History of aneurysm
- Recent concussion, head injury, or brain surgery
Mental health conditions
- Schizophrenia
- Active psychosis
- Bipolar disorder during a manic phase
- Severe dissociative disorders
- Any psychiatric condition that may affect your ability to remain present and grounded during the session
Pregnancy
- Pregnancy, particularly during the second and third trimesters. Breathwork may still be possible with modifications and prior discussion.
Recent surgery or injury
- Major surgery within the past 6–8 weeks
- Recent fractures or injuries that may be aggravated by deep breathing
Respiratory conditions
- Severe asthma
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Any respiratory condition that may be worsened by intensive breathing practices
Eye conditions
- Glaucoma
- Retinal detachment
- Recent eye surgery
Ceremonial cacao contraindications
Please notify your facilitator if any of the following apply to you:
Heart conditions
Cacao contains naturally occurring stimulants including theobromine, and may not be suitable for people with certain heart conditions.
Blood pressure medication
If you take medication for blood pressure, please discuss this with your healthcare practitioner and let your facilitator know before attending.
Antidepressants or psychiatric medication
Particular caution is advised for anyone taking MAOI medications. If you're taking any medication for mental health conditions, please let your facilitator know so appropriate guidance can be given.
Pregnancy & breastfeeding
Ceremonial cacao is generally considered safe in moderate quantities, but we recommend discussing participation with your healthcare provider and informing your facilitator.
Severe anxiety or sensitivity to stimulants
Some people are particularly sensitive to cacao and may experience increased alertness, restlessness, or a racing heartbeat.
Known allergy or sensitivity to cacao
Please let your facilitator know if you have a known allergy or sensitivity to cacao or chocolate products.
Gastrointestinal conditions
Cacao can occasionally aggravate acid reflux, gastritis, or other digestive sensitivities in susceptible individuals.
Common experiences during breathwork & cacao
These experiences are generally temporary and often settle naturally as the body integrates the experience.
